Yes, T-Pain is playing a free show in Mobile. Hereâs how you can go
It’s not too good to be true: Rapper T-Pain is playing a free show Friday night in Mobile, courtesy of a high-profile law firm.
The show is presented by Andy Citrin Injury Attorneys and takes place in Mardi Gras Park in downtown Mobile on Friday, Oct. 20. Promotional materials say gates open at 5 p.m., DJ Dalton will open the show at 6:30 and T-Pain will take the stage at 8.
That’s it. It’s free. Interest has prompted at least one downtown club owner to post in exasperation, “Everybody who has hit me up for T-Pain tickets, I’m gonna tell you a secret … IT’S FREE.” You might not want to show up at 7:59 expecting a front-row spot.
The law firm has described the show as a thank-you to Mobile for its 37 years in business.
T-Pain, born Faheem Rashad Najm, is known for pioneering the heavy use of Auto-Tune on rap vocals and for a string of hit singles in the late 2000s that included “Buy You a Drank (Shawty Snappin’),” “Bartender” and “Can’t Believe It.” Locally, some may recall him for a memorably fun closing set at BayFest in 2009. Others might think of him as the artist who opened an NPR Tiny Desk performance by saying “This is weird as hell for me.”
T-Pain remains active as an artist: On Friday he released the video for a new collaboration with Hert, “Baby Got Brap.” What’s brap? In this context, the ratty sound of a hopped-up Mazda rotary engine; customed RX7s feature heavily in the clip.
